Not every solar vehicle needs to cross a continent. Most of our daily trips are short: school runs, shopping, a ride to the station. The Squad Solar City Car from Squad Mobility in Breda is built for exactly that, and for many owners the sun alone could cover it.
The Squad is a two-seater only 2 m long and about 1.2 m wide, so it fits into the tightest parking spots. A full roll cage, seat belts and four wheels make it far safer than a scooter. As an EU L6e light quadricycle it has a top speed of 45 km/h, and in many countries it can be driven with a moped licence. Two in-wheel motors in the rear wheels deliver a combined 4 kW.
The solar roof adds up to 20 km of range per day in good conditions. For many city drivers that means the car rarely needs a plug. For longer days, two swappable battery packs (about 50 km each) give up to 100 km and can be taken out for charging.
Squad was started by engineers with backgrounds in solar-car development. It was shown at Fully Charged LIVE in Amsterdam in 2022, the photo here, with a planned price of around €6,250 excluding VAT.
