Bay2Bay – Two Belgian Solar Trikes with 500 W Roofs

About this project

Géry Gevers, an engineer in medical technology, and Baudouin de Hemptinne, a lawyer, both fathers of three, ride as the Belgian duo Bay2Bay. They finished the Sun Trip Europe 2021 as the sixth fastest team in 61 days, and came back in 2024 with new bikes.

Their machines are AZUB Ti-Fly trikes with full suspension and ergonomic seats, under a carbon-aluminium roof of solar panels about 2.6 m long and 1 m wide (500 W). The roof can be tilted by hand while riding; in strong wind it locks flat. Each trike has two independent motors: a 750 W Bafang crank motor that runs at a constant, efficient speed, and a 1,000 W Grin front hub motor for extra torque and regeneration. Batteries: two 13S5P packs of Samsung 21700 cells.

“The balance of the two engines gives a sensation of suppleness and crazy power,” says Géry. Baudouin: “Riding comfort is more akin to a limousine than a bike.”
