Sky Ace TIGA – The Fastest Solar Car in the World

About this project

How fast can a car go on the power of the sun? According to Guinness World Records, the answer is 91.332 km/h (56.75 mph). That speed was reached on 20 August 2014 by Kenjiro Shinozuka in the Sky Ace TIGA, built by Ashiya University in Japan.

Ashiya University has a long solar racing history: its Sky Ace V finished 4th in the 2011 World Solar Challenge. Team Shinozuka was formed in 2012 to go for the speed record. Attempts in 2012 and 2013 failed. For 2014 the team chose Shimojishima Airport on the island of Miyakojima, Okinawa, which offered the best conditions in Japan: strong sunlight, a high sun angle and suitable temperatures.

The record shows how much has changed: the 1987 winner Sunraycer averaged 67 km/h. Other record cars on our site: Sunswift IVy and Sunswift 7.
