Lithium batteries are safe when they are treated right – and the overwhelming majority of e-bike batteries never cause a problem. The rare incidents almost always have the same causes: damage, cheap chargers, wrong settings or extreme temperatures. Solar charging adds a few points of its own.

The golden rules

  • Temperature: charge only between about 0 °C and 40 °C; never charge a battery that is hot from the sun or freezing cold.
  • Right voltage: the charge voltage must match the battery exactly – with solar, that means a correctly set MPPT controller.
  • Keep the BMS: always charge through the battery’s BMS, never around it.
  • Fuse and connect properly: see cables, fuses and connectors.
  • Charge where you can see it: on a non-flammable surface, with a smoke alarm nearby, not in a hallway that is your escape route.

Storage

For longer breaks, store the battery cool and dry at about 30–60 % charge and check it every few weeks. Don’t leave it full in a hot car or in direct sun.

Warning signs

  • Swelling, cracks or dents in the case.
  • Unusual heat, smell or hissing.
  • A battery that loses charge on its own or a BMS that keeps cutting out.

If you notice any of these, stop using the battery, keep it outside in a safe place and have it checked.

Special points for solar

A battery under a dark panel in the summer sun gets hot – give it shade and air. And check your settings after every change to the system. Our summer battery safety checklist goes through the details, and the EU Battery Regulation explains what is changing for e-bike batteries. More on the cells: lithium-ion batteries.
